OUR HISTORY
The name Abacus Tattoos was established in 1976 by Charles Hall, “Charlie”, who moved to his first studio in Matlock Bath in 1987 where the name Abacus Tattoos was established. The need for a bigger studio was soon needed, due to Charlie’s work being recognised and in high demand.
At this point, he then moved to London Road, Derby in 1990 taking Abacus Tattoos forward again but due to the very high demand for his work, another move was needed which took Abacus Tattoos to another move and to a bigger studio in 1998 at Sadler Gate, Derby where we currently are today.
With things moving forward very quickly and the studio going from strength to strength, Charlie wanted to move even further in the industry with Abacus tattoos. In 1999 Charlie and Paul Rollett developed their own tattoo colour Premium Colour 2000. Charlie also ensured he was developing the skills of Ben Jones (Roadhouse Tattoo), Mark Horner (Sanctuary Ink) and his daughter Carly Hall, who is still a tattooist and piercer at Abacus Tattoos.
In October 2008 Charlie sadly passed away, leaving the running of the studio to Carly and Son In Law Stuart Moreton, working hard to live up to Charlie’s respected name in the industry and to keep the name of Derby’s longest running studio!
Carly with skills and knowledge for tattooing and piercing after starting in 1999, gaining advise in the world of piercing and body modifications from all over the world. Stuart or “Stuy” started in 2007, gaining knowledge from the likes of Kev Denny, Kev Shercliff and Mark Brown, who are highly acclaimed and award winning for Midland tattoo studio. The team work very hard to offer a warm and welcoming environment to get tattoos, whether it is for the hard core collector or a first timer!
